چکیده

! A 76-year old man was found lying on his carpet after being dead for several weeks. When his decomposing body was removed, putrefaction stains had left an image of his body on the carpet. Although there is no suggestion that the Shroud received its image in this way, this paper adds to the very small number of cases in which the image of a dead person has been left naturally on the surface it was lying on. Another noted case is that of the 44-year old man who left an image on his plastic mattress-cover (The Jospice Mattress case, see Louis de Figueiredo’s paper at http://thegroundoffaith.net/issues/2009-08/Jospice.pdf). Both cases are of peripheral interest rather than direct relevance, but provide some interesting comparisons and points for discussion.

Image Formation and the Shroud of Turin

Both the first written historical record and modern radiocarbon analysis date the cloth known as the shroud of Turin to the 13th or 14th century. Interestingly, many people have remained convinced that the cloth was used as the burial shroud of Jesus and thus must be approximately 2000 years old. The primary reason usually cited for this belief is the inability of scientists to explain how a 13...

The Chemistry of Autocatalytic Processes in the Context of the Shroud of Turin

Based on the facts of chemistry and current storage conditions, the Shroud of Turin is in no danger of autocatalytic decomposition. Autocatalytic chemical reactions are those in which the rate increases as the materials react. The most important single factor in predicting effects is the temperature. When the temperature changes, the rate changes. The only severe heating episode the Shroud has ...

The Shroud of Turin: an Amino-carbonyl Reaction (maillard Reaction) May Explain the Image Formation

The Shroud of Turin is a large piece of linen that shows the faint image of a man on its surface: it has been claimed to be the shroud of Jesus. Here we report evidences that colour can be produced by reactions between reducing sugars, left on the cloth by the manufacturing procedure, and amines deriving from the decomposition of a corpse. Treatment of a cloth prepared according to the ancient ...

When photographed, the Shroud image appears more clearly to the human eye in the photographic negative than in the photopositive. When image-processed by a VP-8 Image Analyzer, the Shroud image produces a three-dimensional response unlike any other image so pr...
